Nettlefold Garden
Nettlefold Garden is a pocket park owned by Moor Pool Heritage Trust and open to the public.
Located at the bottom of Margaret Grove, the garden is open from 10am until dusk every day from spring to autumn and on weekends in winter.
History of Nettlefold Garden
The corner of Margaret Grove and Moor Pool Avenue was used by the original residents of Moor Pool as a recreational area and they held their May Day festivities there, as seen in this photograph from 1910.
By the 1990’s, the area had become overgrown and unloved. Moor Pool Heritage Trust acquired the land in 2014 and, with thanks to Pocket Park funding from Birmingham City Council and the hard work of local volunteers, the Nettlefold Garden opened in 2017.
Visit Nettlefold Garden
The Nettlefold Garden has a lawn, grassy mound, wildlife area and den-building bosk. The lawn is encircled by an all-weather path, allowing access for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Borders are planted for seasonal interest and there is always something new to see.
The garden is also home to ‘The Elizabeth Oak’, named after Queen Elizabeth II and planted as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative that began in May 2021 to honour the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022. Under this initiative, an oak sapling, kindly donated by The Alscot Estate in Warwickshire, was planted in the Nettlefold Garden on November 14th 2021. The official unveiling of this tree was on June 5th 2022.
Events at the Nettlefold Garden
The garden hosts various community events throughout the year, including an Easter egg hunt, the Moor Pool Residents Association mid-summer garden party and a Halloween Spooktacular.
Tai Chi sessions are held in the garden on Tuesdays, 10-11am, £3 per person.
