Love at Moor Pool

As February is the month of love, we thought we’d dive into the archives to take a look at three Moor Pool love stories, spanning almost a century.

Pamela Bolton-Frost and her husband Les grew up together on Moor Pool Avenue in the 1920s and 30s. Pamela lived at number 85 and Les at number 14. The photo above was taken on the Circle by the Tennis Courts in 1932, when Les was 12 and Pamela was 10.

Speaking in 2009, Pamela said, “He was at King Edward Five Ways when I was at St Paul’s and he used to go on his bicycle to school, and when he finished school he used to cycle up Hagley Road to St Paul’s … and he used to wait for me to come out, and then I used to sit on his cross bar on his bike, and he used to cycle me home.”

They were married in 1941, nine years after this photo was taken, and just before Les went to Burma in the Second World War. They got married at St Peter’s Church on “the wettest Saturday for the last fourteen years they said on the radio. But although it rained… we had a lovely wedding.”

Hilary Everard was born at 25 Margaret Grove in 1935. She met her husband Patrick, a motor mechanic, when she was 18 and they married in 1957. They held their wedding reception in the Lower Hall and had photographs taken on the tennis courts, as seen above. The couple moved into a house on Moor Pool Avenue a year later, where Hilary lived until her death last year. We’re very grateful to Hilary and Patrick’s daughter Rachel for sharing these photos with us.

Fast forward 67 years and another local couple were taking their wedding photos on the courts of the Circle Tennis Club! Lucy and Tim held their wedding reception at Moor Pool Hall on 2nd September 2023, following a ceremony at Selly Manor in Bournville. They said, “The hall is such a beautiful setting – it meant so much to us to have all our friends and family there to celebrate our wedding. Whenever we walk past the hall now, it fills us with so much joy to think of what a happy day we had.”
